History loves the figures who were best known in their own times. Books have been written about Dorothea Dix and Clara Barton, who devoted their time to tending the wounded. Books have even been written about the time Walt Whitman spent tending the wounded in Washington hospitals.

Stonewall Jackson is the focus of far more books, articles and late-night arguments than his sister because he had far more impact on the course of the war than she. If you were planning to market a book, whose name would you rather have in the title: Stonewall Jackson or Laura Arnold?

----------------------------------

Steve,

You make a valid point, but I'll stand by my claim that history loves a warrior more than a nurse. In the case of Laura Arnold and her brother, its a bit of a trick question. One was famous, and the other is only known at all because her brother was famous. I was specifically trying to get at the irony of two siblings -- one trying to kill as many Union soldiers as possible, and the other trying to save as many as she could.

And if I want to market a book, I'll call it "The Ghost of Stonewall Jackson at Gettysburg"!

Daviddwhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01748726942956990159noreply@blogger.com
